Mr. Robert Bermudez has been approved as the 6th Chancellor of The UWI. His appointment was announced as members of the University Council approved the recommendation from the Search Committee (for a new Chancellor) at the Council’s annual business meeting, held on April 27, at The Cave Hill Campus.
Chancellor Designate, Mr. Bermudez is expected to begin a seven-year term of service on July 16, 2017, succeeding Sir George Alleyne who has served as Chancellor since 2003, with astounding leadership skill and dignity.
The UWI constantly seeks to enhance its relevance to the region and as such the UWI Mona has partnered with the National Commercial Bank to produce critical corporate transformation research. This programme is the first of its kind in the Caribbean and stems from the observation that many Caribbean-based companies are in need of radical change in organisational behaviour to equip them to navigate the dynamic global and local environments. The UWI was the first port of call to organise this academic research.
The opening of the new second high court at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial Complex in Basseterre, St. Kitts, has seen the appointment of a second judge to serve the St. Kitts Circuit – Her Ladyship, the Honourable Justice Pearletta Lanns, a Nevisian. In 1985, Justice Lanns, on completion of her library degree, attended the UWI Open Campus in St. Kitts and Nevis and joined the Challenge Programme, which had offered a first year Law LLB of the degree programme.
Office of the Principal, Bridgetown, Barbados. 24 April 2017: The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus and the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) Marooners recently partnered to offer a high-level Cricket Scouting Camp to young cricketers from throughout the Leeward Islands from April 20 to 25, 2017 in St. Kitts & Nevis. Other participants at the cricket camp included UWI Open Campus students from the Eastern Caribbean, who will participate in The UWI Student Games this summer.

Friday, 21 April 2017 – The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has noted, with surprise, the announcement made by Trinidad & Tobago’s Minister of Education, Mr. Anthony Garcia at a post-Cabinet media briefing earlier today, on the subject of the appointment of a new UWI Chancellor.
The University Administration wishes to take this opportunity to indicate that Chancellors are appointed in accordance with the University’s Statute 4 which clearly states, “The Chancellor shall be appointed by the University Council.”
