It was at the Antigua Grammar School that Franklyn Lennox Francis taught me West Indian history. He was the person who first brought to me a consciousness of self and to whom I am grateful for helping me to become the person that I am.

​A UWI Medical Alumni Association Endowment : Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the UWI “Catalyzing and assuring future development"

The 75th Anniversary of the University of the West Indies (The UWI) represents an ideal opportunity for the UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) to mobilize and galvanize the medical alumni to assist in the further development and sustainability of their alma mater and to honor the founding pioneers.

The UWI Open Campus Endowment Fund

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus Alumni recently launched an Endowment Fund to provide scholarships to talented yet needy students from across the Caribbean as well as grants for developmental projects for the Open Campus. The earnings from the fund will be utilised under the guidance of a Governing Board of Advisors consisting primarily of Alumni and the Open Campus Administration.  The fund will be professionally managed with transparency and periodic reporting to all stakeholders.

UWI Alumna Tania Waldron-Gooden appointed CEO of Caribbean Assurance Brokers

Tania Waldron-Gooden has been appointed the Chief  Executive Officer of listed company Caribbean Assurance Brokers. Her appointment was effective January 1, 2022. She replaced Raymond Walker who retired on December 31, 2021.  She brings to the organization over fourteen years of experience in areas such as Investment Banking, Research, New Product Development, Pension Fund, and Portfolio Management.

Veteran Educator, Writer and Cultural Activist, Dr. Patricia Turnbull and Medical Director of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Dr. Domnick Frazer have been awarded The University of the West Indies Alumni Association (UWIAA) BVI Pelican Award for 2021. The Awards were presented to the two outstanding UWI Alumni on December 16, 2021, at a special Ceremony hosted by the UWIAA BVI Chapter and The UWI Open Campus BVI.

The UWI’s Global Tourism Resilience Centre earns World Travel Award 2021 for ‘World’s Leading Tourism Initiative’

The University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) has received special recognition as the World’s Leading Tourism Initiative at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2021. Held on December 16, in Dubai, the award scheme, which celebrated its 28th edition this year, acknowledges, rewards and celebrates excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry. It is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality.

December 21, 2021. — Professor Michael Taylor, The University of the West Indies, (The UWI) Mona Campus’ Professor of Climate Science, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and a world renowned expert in climate science has been named among Apolitical’s 100 Most Influential Academics in Government.

The UWIMAA has Partnered with Internal Medicine Learning Collaborative to Share Lecture Series to UWI Medical Alumni Across the World.

Dr. B. Permashwar is the founder and director of the Internal Medicine Learning Collaborative series carried in the UWI Alumni Soft and Life Skills Series -he sees this as a simple way of sharing medical knowledge and expertise and promoting collaboration with physicians to achieve better patient experience and outcome. Dr. Permashwar studied medicine at the UWI, Mona and graduated in 1995. 

Curt Claude Bodkyn’s Story

I have a keen interest in improving the outcome for children with cancer in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean region. Following my undergraduate training in medicine, I trained for 10 years in the UK specializing in Paediatrics with a subspecialty in Paediatric Oncology. 

Melissa Jack’s Story

My name is Melissa Jack and I’m currently a Year 4 Medical Student at The UWI ST. Augustine Campus (STA). I am a 24-year-old national of Trinidad and Tobago who enjoys Music and Sports. I am the UWI STA Guild Faculty of Medical Sciences Representative and the Medical Sciences Student Council Chairperson for the year 2021-2022. Additionally, I am also the Public Relations Officer for the Mt. Hope Surgical Society and the National Exchange Officer (NEO) for the Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) within the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Students Association (TTMSA). 

Carol Ann Solomon’s Story

I grew up in the village of Barataria and attended the Barataria Anglican Primary School. At age 10 my family moved to Tunapuna, and I did the Common Entrance Exam one year later. I then joined my sister at St. George’s College where I spent seven happy years. After St. George’s, I entered the Faculty of Natural Sciences (as it was called then) at the UWI St. Augustine campus. This was the start of a long relationship with the UWI. I graduated with a BSc in Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry, First Class Honours. 

What are Young Medical Pelicans Doing?

Dr. Brian Kazaara is a recent UWI medical graduate and is currently the president of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Young Alumni Group (YAG) at the Mona campus and first vice president of the UWI Alumni Association. He constantly advocates for young medical graduates to be a part of medical alumni associations, like the UWIMAA and YAG because he understands its importance. He encourages medical alumni to tap into events and represent the UWI as medical graduates across the world. 

Launch of US$1.5 Million Dollar Endowment - A Word from Chancellor Emeritus Sir. George Alleyne

The Board of the UWIMAA has had numerous planning sessions to establish new initiatives to address some identified problems. One such initiative has been the launch of the University of the West Indies Medical Alumni Association Endowment which marks the 33rd year of the Association as well as celebrating in advance the 75th anniversary of the University. I am sure you all know that the University began in 1948 with 33 medical students-which makes us the founding Faculty.

The UWI Five Islands Campus receives full national registration from ABNAB

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus is now fully registered with the highest accreditation body in Antigua and Barbuda. The campus which was established in 2019, received its certificate of full registration from the Antigua and Barbuda National Accreditation Board (ABNAB) in a ceremony on Friday December 10, 2021. The campus is registered for three (3) years with ABNAB.

UWI Alumna Dr. Joan M. Rawlins publishes autobiography "From Mannings High to Far off Places...Foot Prints"

Dr. Joan M. Rawlins was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica, and spent her early years in Savanna-la-Mar, where she attended Manning’s High School. At age fourteen, she migrated to the United Kingdom with her parents. On completion of High School in the UK, she embarked on a brief, but empowering education in the field of “health”, graduating as a registered nurse (SRN), a qualified Midwife (SCM), and as a Health Visitor (Public Health Nurse) in five years.
