UWI Pelicans focus on Jamaica College

UWI Pelicans Hylton W. Dennis and Ian Andrews are not only proud alumni of The UWI, but also proud graduates of their High School Jamaica college and they have come together to produce Jamaica College: A Sugar Cane Planter’s Legacy 1721 – 2108.

The book is presently sold at Jamaica College and after the official launch on March 22, 2020 it will be in bookstores island-wide and in the region.

UWI Shines at Harvard!

Delegates from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Institute of International Relations (IIR) won commendations in the highly regarded 2020 Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN). Delegates from the IIR also won commendations in the 2019 HNMUN, standing out among delegates from some 60 countries, among them the highest-ranked universities in the world.

On February 19, 2020 the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) hosted its 23rd Annual Awards Gala at the iconic Pierre Hotel in Manhattan, New York. Lorraine Toussaint received the Bob Marley Award and here celebrates with alumni at the Pre-Gala Cocktail.

This year’s event, which is each year attended by the Diaspora, alumni and Friends of the UWI, corporate USA and executive management of The UWI, honoured the following:

Pelican Soaring: Senator Rosemary Moodie

UWI graduate Senator Rosemary Moodie MBBS'82 was one of the Honourees at the 2020 Ryerson University Viola Desmond Awards. She is a pediatrician and neonatologist, who was appointed to the Senate of Canada in December 2018.

Famous for challenging racial injustice, Viola Desmond is remembered at an annual awards ceremony that celebrates outstanding contributions made to Canada by women of African descent, Ryerson University’s Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion hosted the 12th annual Viola Desmond Awards Ceremony on March 2, 2020.

Virtual International Climate Change Youth Forum focuses on Caribbean Synergies

The Vice Chancellor’s UWI STAT Ambassadors activities held their annual virtual regional Youth Forum to support SDG 13 - Climate Action on March 5, 2020. It was a part of the Fourth International Seminar on SDGs focusing on Climate Action taking place in Kingston, Jamaica at the Regional Headquarters of The UWI.

UWI alumna Karen E Bravo has been named Dean of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law at   Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from The UWI, Mona and she received her Master of Laws from the New York University School of Law and her Juris Doctor from the Columbia University School of Law.

Tribute to Susan Belgrave - UWI Alumna and Lead BFUWI Trustee

UWI alumna, esteemed Employment Barrister and Lead Trustee of the British Foundation of The University of the West Indies (BFUW), Susan Belgrave, was a remarkable lady and she will be greatly missed. 

University Director, Marketing and Communications appointed

The UWI is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Rhonda Jaipaul-O’Garro as University Director, Marketing and Communications. In this role, Dr Jaipaul-O’Garro is responsible for the coordination of integrated marketing and communications across the entire University system.

UWI alumna Lisa Soares Lewis honoured at World HRD Congress as a Most Talented HR Leader in Mumbai, India.

Sir Hilary Beckles: 40 years of service

Vice-Chancellor Beckles joined the Mona Campus in 1979 as a temporary lecturer at age 24. At the time he was just out of graduate school in the UK, where he completed a doctorate in Economic History at Hull University.

The UWI and Brock University: Canada-Caribbean Institute

On February 17, 2020, The UWI and Canada’s Brock University launched a joint institute to promote, transform, and upgrade two hundred years of solid relations that have facilitated Caribbean development. Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica, Her Excellency Laurie Peters, who was a quiet but effective supporter of the project from the beginning, was in attendance, along with officials from both universities.  The launch ceremony was followed by a two-day symposium on Canada-Caribbean relations.

Joint Conference of the Society for Economic Botany (SEB) and the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE) will be hosted by the UWI Mona Campus

The Joint Conference of the Society for Economic Botany (SEB) and the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE) will be hosted by the UWI Mona Campus on 31st May – 4th June 2020. The conference is expected to host between 300-350 delegates from over 50 countries under the title ‘Out of Many, One People: Biocultural Diversity across Borders.’ 

Young Alumni Advocates (YAA) launched!

The YAA, a group “powered by the Alumni Ambassadors of the Vice Chancellor’s UWI STAT Ambassadorial Corps will operate regionally and internationally as an active resource network for each other as well as young graduates and will visibly promote alumni engagement and interact with their respective campuses.

Dr. Paul Ramphal: improving the cardiology skills of medical students

UWI graduate, Dr Paul Ramphal, the inventor of a heart simulator as a cardiac surgery training tool for students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences reports on the progress of his invention. This simulator allows students to practice cardiac surgery procedures without having to practice on humans. The patent for the simulator is owned 50% by himself, Professor Daniel Coore and Dr Michael Craven, who helped him implement and develop it; and 50% by UWI. The technology has been licensed to KindHeart Ltd, a start-up based in Chapel Hill North Carolina, USA.

Dr. Godfrey A. Gibbison - Phd, MSc, BSc; was awarded the UWIAA New York Chapter’s 2020 Pelican Award at the American Foundation for UWI Gala on February 19, 2020 at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan New York. Dr. Gibbison hails from the farming community of Contrivance in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica. He is the last of seven children who were raised primarily by the matriarch of the family after his father passed.

UWI Open Campus St. Lucia awards Regional Development Foundation recipients

Several students were the proud recipients of Certificates from the UWI Open Campus St Lucia on January 31, 2020. The occasion saw the attendance of 45 graduates along with representatives from the university and various organizations, including the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation.

Former Chief Justice Margaret Ramsay-Hale is leaving the Turks and Caicos Islands

Former Chief Justice Margaret Ramsay-Hale is leaving the Turks and Caicos Islands to take up a position as a judge of the Grand Court in the Cayman Islands. When she was appointed to the Turks and Caicos Islands judiciary in 2011, Ramsay-Hale became the first woman to be appointed a judge of the Supreme Court. In September 2014, she again made history, becoming the Islands’ first female chief justice.

UWI STAT Representing Regionally and Internationally

UWI STAT was invited by the Caribbean Regional Youth Council (CRYC) to participate in the  6th Caribbean Youth Leaders’ Summit. Ambassadors from the Mona and St. Augustine UWI STAT Corps participated, as well as Alumni Ambassadors.

The Summit, held from January 21 – 23, 2020, the Hyatt Regency and Conference Center in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, had the theme “Promoting Economic Empowerment- Building Synergies Towards Sustainable Development”.
