The UWI FMS Student Study Recreational Centre Sod-Turning Ceremony

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157629586028021/{/gallery} As part of the continued efforts towards meeting the needs of the expanding student population, The UWI St. Augustine Campus will soon begin work on constructing a new Student Study/Recreational Centre within the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mt. Hope.
At the sod-turning ceremony held on Monday 12th March 2012, Campus Principal, Professor Clement Sankat, gave some detail on the new Recreational Centre. “Our more than 700 medical students will now be able to benefit from a new student study/recreational centre with computer labs, study rooms, meeting rooms, and recreational facilities such as lawn tennis, table tennis, and a mini mart”. Prof. Sankat went on to say that the sod-turning ceremony was a testament to The UWI’s commitment to enhancing its physical capacity, for the benefit of current and future students and by extension, the entire stakeholder community.

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education, also spoke at the ceremony. Mr. Karim highlighted that the Recreational Centre had been in the works since 2006 but had to be delayed due to project costs. This delay, he said, meant that “Hundreds of students had been deprived of facilities that would enable them to study, exchange ideas, interact with their peers and engage in recreational activities”. Mr. Karim went on to say that the initiative fell within the People’s Partnership Manifesto and Medium Term Policy Framework 2011-2014, which seek to ‘improve the physical infrastructure of public health and public health care facilities’ and also engage in ‘a lifelong commitment to health’. Mr. Karim described the new facility as a means of improving the quality of experience for medical students; which in turn will positively impact on the quality of health care provided to all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.

Also speaking at the event was Minister of Health, The Honourable Dr. Fuad Khan, who took the time to highlight some ways in which the Ministry has been working at enhancing medical services. He also gave detail on the “Fight the Fat- TnT Wellness Revolution” initiative, which aims at encouraging citizens to increase their physical activity and achieve a healthy weight.
