UWI Alumni in Anguilla now on track for increased engagement

The Anguilla UWI Alumni Association Chapter now has an Executive Team in place. They are looking forward to engaging alumni with the UWI Open Campus site in Anguilla and can be contacted at uwiaa.anguilla@alumni.uwi.edu

Inaugural Alumni Career Link Up

The regional inaugural Alumni Career Link Up went extremely well. Four alumni from Boston, New York and New Jersey shared real world current career advice virtually for over an hour using the OC Blackbaud Collaborate system. Subject areas included business law, negotiation, biochemistry and biotechnology etc. The alumni who gave freely of their time and expertise were Howard Goode, Victor Brown, Rayon Ward and Donovan Rodriques.

Over 80 students and young alumni joined the session from across the Caribbean and the session was very favourably received.

The inaugural UWI Class of 1967 Award for Excellence in Leadership and Innovation

Mr. Jachin Mullings receives the Class of 1967 Award from Professor Neville Ying.

Mr. Jachin Mullings, is the recipient of The UWI Class of 1967 Award for Excellence in Leadership and Innovation for the academic year 2017/2018. He is a second year student in Electronic Engineering at Mona and his leadership credentials are noteworthy. He is a UWI Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow and Vice Chancellor’s Ambassador, the Off-Campus Representative for Chancellor Hall, the UWI Mona Faculty of Engineering Deputy Representative on the UWI Mona Guild of Students 2018/19 and much more!

Chevano Baker & Zubin Deyal

UWI Graduates cop 2019 Rhodes scholarships.  Chevano Baker, UWI STAT Alumni Ambassador won the Jamaican Rhodes Scholarship and Zubin Deyal won the Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes scholarship. They both topped the field of a number of young people who vied for the prestigious award this year. Both will be studying at the University of Oxford, U.K.

The UWI Alumni Association on Security of Students at The UWI Campuses

The collective Chapters of the UWI Alumni Association are deeply concerned about the security of students at St. Augustine, and indeed all the UWI campuses. Student security is of paramount importance and we trust that the administration at St. Augustine will work with students to take all necessary steps to ensure safety on or around the campus.

The Vice Chancellor’s Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year Awards took place at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, UWI Cave Hill on October 19, 2018. Fedrick Dacres from the Mona Campus and Brittany Joseph from the St. Augustine Campus took the top prizes.

The Open Campus Alumni recognize their peers!

The Open Campus UWIAA St. Lucia Chapter hosted the Chancellor's Forum and Pelican Awards in St. Lucia on October 13, 2018 and it was a great success.  The 10 awardees were overjoyed and their "journeys" which have contributed so much to our nations and region - were truly inspirational.

The UWI Health and Wellness Fest - Building Valuable Partnerships

The Fundraising and Alumni Affairs Unit of the Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalisation, The Faculties of Medical Sciences, Food of Agriculture & Sport along with other supporting units collaborated to host the first UWI Health and Wellness Fest on September 7th & 8th at The UWI SPEC, St. Augustine Campus.

On Thursday, September 27th, The UWI’s Honorary Graduate, Dr. Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce brought her Shelly’s Pop Up Café to the UWI Mona’s Alumni House and showed off her culinary entrepreneurial skills. The UWI Alumni Association Jamaica Chapter invited her to support the University’s alumni engagement programme and to demonstrate to students that one can have many interests and talents and be successful in them all.

Dr Sandra Williams Phillips

Saluting Dr Sandra Williams Phillips MBBS DCH DM FACC FHRS FESC FASE FAHA FACHT JP – distinguished Cardiologist who has achieved the aforementioned accomplishments.
She is a three time graduate of UWI, MBBS [1981], Diploma in Child Health,[1983] Doctor of Medicine (Paediatrics) [1986].

UWI Mona opens Faculty of Engineering

The UWI Mona now has a new Faculty of Engineering and looks forward to equipping more professionals to satisfy the growing demand of Jamaica and the Caribbean’s construction and industrial sectors.

The UWI Class of 1967 establishes Award for Excellence in Leadership and Innovation.

In celebration of their 50th Anniversary of Graduation last year, the UWI Class of 1967 decided to give back something tangible to their Alma Mater. After much deliberation, they decided to endow an annual prize to a student from the new Faculty of Engineering – Mona, to be known as: The UWI Class of 1967 Award for Excellence in Leadership and Innovation. They chose to use the Award to increase attention to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) agenda there at Mona and opportunely to celebrate the establishment at Mona of the new Faculty of Engineering.

UWI Class of ’68 Marks its Golden Anniversary

Members of the “Class of 1968” graduates of UWI, will stage a grand Golden Anniversary Celebration October 3 – 7, 2018, to mark 50 years since their graduation from The University of the West Indies. A Planning Committee, co-chaired by Mr Danny James and Dr Marjorie Cobham, has been busy since April of this year organising the planned events for batchmates, who are coming from all over the Caribbean and the Diaspora.

Remembering H.E. Cedric Lanyon Harper – longest serving Warden of Irvine Hall

H.E. Cedric Lanyon Harper, has passed at the age of 87. He served as High Commissioner for St. Kitts and Nevis to Jamaica from 2001 to 2018 and had a distinguished 35-year career as a diplomat and was lauded as an endearing and effective representative for St. Kitts and Nevis who served his country with dedication, dignity and diplomatic aplomb by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

Stella Jackman-Ryan

Stella Jackman-Ryan, earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and clinical psychology, respectively, from The University of the West Indies. She hails from Trinidad and Tobago and is a Fulbright Laspau Award recipient and has joined the NC State College of Education as a doctoral student in educational psychology.

Alumni Engagement Programme to Begin this Month!

This programme will allow each lecturer, every semester, to expose their students to at least ONE graduate in the field who can share work experience, trends or cutting edge discoveries in the field, ways to overcome challenges, articles/websites to follow or useful organizations to join and more. This Alumni Relations Engagement programme supports the Triple A Strategic Plan, as Faculty Deans have been asked to expose students to the world of work and that therefore the AEP fits into this larger initiative.

The Caribbean to become world’s first climate-smart zone

Members leading the Climate Change Smart Accelerator initiative, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica, Sir Richard Branson, UWI Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles  and Dr. the Hon. Usain Bolt.

This partnership seeks to ensure that the Caribbean will become the world’s first ‘climate-smart zone’ and it was launched at the UWI Mona Campus. A coalition of 26 countries and over 40 private and public sector partners are now working together to implement climate solutions for resilience, renewable energy, development of sustainable cities, oceans and transportation.

Dr. the Right Excellent and Right Honourable, Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, was the recipient of the University of the West Indies Alumni Association (UWIAA) St. Kitts and Nevis Chapter Pelican Award on August 01, 2018, at Government House.

The UWIAA BVI rises

Mrs. Celia George, UWI Alumna, is now the official UWIAA Contact in the BVI and is encouraging UWI alumni in the BVI to become engaged with the Open Campus site there as well as The UWI generally.

She is ably assisted by Ms. Tanisha Todd, of the Open Campus BVI. Mr. Sandeep Jagger has worked with Campus Alumni Officer for the Open Campus, Mrs. Sandra Griffith- Carrington to revitalize the Chapter.

“Our graduates are our most important asset. We are delighted to recognise them at this moment of the University’s history” noted Chancellor Robert Bermudez at the University of the West Indies (UWI) 70th Anniversary Pelican Awards on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Seven distinguished alumni were honoured for professional excellence and community service in the Caribbean and internationally.

Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI, Mrs Celia Davidson Francis, during her address, declared “I truly believe that The UWI’s power and reach lies in its graduate population.”
