ON THE ROAD – Sharing Museum Ideas

by Suzanne Francis-Brown
One stop on the road this month was the world of Museum Ideas – via the annual Museum ID conference held this year at the Science Museum in London, titled: The Future of Museums in the Era of Participatory Culture.
The best part of the conference was the opportunity was to sit back and listen to a range of other museum professionals present aspects of their work that overlap in small or big ways with the work we’re doing at the UWI Museum. I’m including the programme to show the range of the presentations.

HELMET HISTORY

The University (College) of the West Indies came into being in the aftermath of World War II (1939-1945), on the grounds of a military camp which had taken over the grounds of a previous civilian evacuee and refugee camp. Indeed the soldiers moved off the site at the end of 1947 to make room for the university’s advent; and the name Gibraltar Camp is still part of the UWI heritage.
One tangible artefact at the UWI Museum helps tell that story, hence its value is significant though it is one of millions produced.

MEDICAL MEDALLIST

Pauline Barrow, widow of consultant gastroenterologist Orrin Barrow, visited the UWI Museum and we took the opportunity to get some background on this iconic musician-doctor whose medical medals are now in the UWI Museum collection.

MONUMENT HONOURS UWI GRADUATES WHO LEAD GOVERNMENTS

The University of the West Indies’ founding Mona Campus has created a tradition that reflects one aspect of the UWIs undeniable contribution to Caribbean life and development. In a park near the campus’ Irvine Hall Gate, on a monument whose centrepiece harks back to the early university and to Gibraltar Camp which preceded it, the names of UWI graduates who have become regional leaders of government are inscribed.
