New York

Welcome to the UWIAA New York Chapter!

Alumni in the New York and Tri-State area are invited to CONNECT to the UWIAA NY and become engaged to network and socialize.

UWI Chancellor Emeritus, Sir George Alleyne, launched his book - The Grooming of a Chancellor -  in New York in March 2019 and this event was held in association with the UWIAA New York Chapter, with the President Dr. Gerald White Davis, giving Remarks, as well as UWI alumna, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Missouri Sherman Peter.
The UWIAA NY supports the American Foundation for the UWI (AFUWI) Gala annually.
Many alumni including Caribbean Ambassadors and Ambassadors assigned as Permanenent Represenatives to the United Nations attend the Gala annually at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan, as well as the After Party.
The 2019 UWIAA New York Chapter presented its PELICAN AWARD to H.E. Ambassador Pennelope Beckles, the Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, for excellence in Law, Politics and Diplomacy.
The 2018 UWIAA New York Chapter presented its PELICAN AWARD to Man Booker Prize Winner (the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for Literature) to Marlon James at the AFUWI Gala. This is the Chapter's most prestigious award. It is a peer award and thus signals that the honoree is held in the highest regard by her/his fellow alumni. The Pelican Award will be presented at the AFUWI Gala annually from now on.
While in New York to attend the Gala, the Director of AR took the time to meet with alumni. She was also invited to the Flag Raising Ceremony to celebrate Saint.Lucia's Independence on February 22 at the Brooklyn Borough Hall by UWI alumna, H.E.Ambassador Missouri  Sherman-Peter, the CARICOM Permanent Representative to the United Nations. While at the inspiring and celebratory ceremony she was pleased to meet H.E. Ambassador Cosmos Richardson, St. Lucia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, another UWI alumnus.
She met many alumni at the United Nations, incuding H. E. Rudolph Michael Ten-Pow and Tamara Brathwaite.  Mrs. Davidson Francis expressed her delight at seeing the Pelican Award being presented at the AFUWI Gala, something she had been advocating, which was now supported by Ann Marie Grant, the Executive Director of the AFUWI, as well as Dr. White-Davis.
