World Bank Project in Dominica – ‘Housing Recovery Project’ (P166537)

A great opportunity has recently become available on a World Bank Project in the Caribbean – ‘Housing Recovery Project’ (P166537). The Commonwealth of Dominica has secured financing from the International Development Association (IDA) credit and a Crisis Response Window Grant for the Housing Recovery Project (HRP). The HRP is one of the projects in the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica’s National Housing Repair and Reconstruction Programme portfolio.

UWI’s 70th celebrated by alumni and staff of the UWI Open Campus in St. Kitts and Nevis

The staff at the Open Campus St. Kitts & Nevis Site and the UWIAA SKN celebrated UWI’s 70th Anniversary with a fun event to mark this milestone - the Back-in-Time fete!! This took place on June 2, 2018. It was not just a celebration but also an opportunity to raise funds for students who may require financial assistance. It was a memorable evening with great throwback music – courtesy Ronnie Rascal, dancing, reminiscing and good ole liming.

Dr. Sasha Turner

UWI alumna, Dr. Sasha Turner of North Haven, Associate Professor of History, recently received the 2018 Maria Stewart Journal Article Prize from the African American Intellectual History Society for her essay: The Nameless and the Forgotten: Maternal Grief, Sacred Protection and the Archives of Slavery. She was also recognized as the 2018 Faculty Scholar in the College of Arts and Sciences at Quinnipiac University.

Campus Alumni Officer of the Cave Hill Campus Roseanne Maxwell got alumni involved in the 70th Anniversary Lumninaries gala dinner by giving them a chance to attend the $500 dollar event.  She asked alumni to donate a $100 and for every five persons she raffled a ticket for someone to attend.  As a result she was able to give nine alumni the opportunity to attend the event, one person short of a full table.

Making us proud - UWI STAT Alumni Ambassadors who met up in London last week continue to show that UWI STAT is indeed a Leadership Incubator, attracting youth who have a passion for volunteerism and service and for leaving the world a better place. State Minister of Education (Jamaica) the Hon. Floyd Green, one of the founding members of the UWI STAT Corps in 2006 and Naketa West, Senior Director, Youth and Adolescent Policy Division in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information Jamaica, were in London for the Youth Ministerial task force.

The UWI Vice-Chancellor's Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (UWI STAT) Ambassador Corps hosted a Climate Change Forum themed, The Eye of the Storm: The Implications of the Paris Agreement/Climate Change and the “Right to Life” for Caribbean Youth. The Forum was held synchronously at the University’s Cave Hill, Mona and St Augustine campuses and streamed live on UWItv  on April 12, 2018.

The Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI, Mrs. Celia Davidson Francis attended the special Church Service at the Holy Family Episcopal Church in Miami Gardens with the UWIAA Florida Chapter on Sunday, March 18th. She delivered a Message highlighting developments through the UWI's 70 years and then introduced a video showing the UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckle's 70th Message which was also very well received.  The Chapter members were delighted with the turnout as persons came from West Palm Beach, Coral Springs, Lauderhill, Fort Lauderdale and other places as well.
