Running with the Baton

The UWI Museum is truly a community built space and I am honored to have selected to maintain and expand this treasure. I salute Dr. Suzanne Francis-Brown who worked tirelessly and, with your support created a solid foundation for me to build upon. Suzanne has worked closely with me to facilitate this transition and I am extremely grateful for her support and willingness to share institutional knowledge.
As a UWI alum, I would like to take this opportunity to share a little about myself and my initial plan for the museum over the next few years.

A/V: GROWING UP ON WEST ROAD, MONA

Carolyn Chan grew up knowing the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies as her backyard. She considers herself a ‘West Road-ian’, having literally been born at #2 West Road when her father, Wilfred Chan, was in the Chemistry Department of the UWI Mona Campus. But the family also lived for some years at College Common, the other major housing area on the campus, where the Vice-Chancellor, professors, lecturers and senior administrators lived and where their children remember the 1960s and early 1970s as a time of freedom to roam and grow.

Update on Brittany!

Many of you sent contributions to help Brittany try to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the Pan American Games by going to the Qualifiers in Guatemala City, on May 24th and 25th. She tried her very best, but unfortunately was not selected. Despite this disappointment, she gained great experience from playing among the best. She did however lead the St. Augustine Table Tennis team to win that category at the 2109 UWI Games and she also won the award for Most Valuable Player in Table Tennis there.

A/V: Pon di Ring Road!

Carnival in Jamaica first developed on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, brought north by homesick students from the southern Caribbean region and nurtured by students and staff and their families. It’s something clearly remembered by persons who grew up as Campus Kids – spending years and even decades connected to the rhythms of the university and the region.
