Toronto, ON – (May 4, 2026) – The University of the West Indies (UWI) Toronto Benefit Awards delivered a powerful and purpose-driven evening, raising $450,000 in support of scholarships for Caribbean students, with a portion of funds dedicated to assisting those impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

From Kingston to the Moon: A Journey of Science and Service | Dr. Maureen Vickers-Lahti, MBBS ’82B

In February 1983, I graduated from the University of the West Indies, completing two years of internship at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). With a passion for public health and data, I pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I remained at UMass Amherst following graduation, supporting numerous research projects with a focus on data management and analysis in epidemiological studies.

But more than 50 years before today, another unforgettable experience helped shape my journey.

 

Celebration our Own Mr. Vernal Alexander Norman

Mr. Vernal Alexander Normanclass of 68', educator, churchman, and community leader, celebrated his 100th birthday on September 10, 2025. He was born in Commodore, Portland, to Joseph and Euphemia Norman, and is the last surviving of their four children.

Education and Professional Life Mr. Norman received his early schooling at Fruitful Vale Elementary and began his career in
education as a pre-trained teacher before entering the Mico Training College in 1948. He is today the oldest surviving Miconian.

UWI LONDON GALA 2026

On November 7, 2025 — The 2nd Annual UWI London Benefit Dinner was held. It was another spectacular success.  Held in the impressive Great Hall of The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn on Friday, November 7th, the prestigious event, attended by distinguished guests, celebrated the very best of the Caribbean.

Baroness Patricia Scotland, the first woman Secretary General of The Commonwealth; Sir Trevor McDonald, renowned and beloved Journalist; and Ambassador Theresa Roberts, entrepreneur and philanthropist were among the honourees.

UWI Mona Launches New Course on EV Technologies

The Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona, will be introducing a new course aimed at equipping students with a broad foundation in the burgeoning field of electric mobility. Commencing in Semester 2 of the Academic Year 2023-2024, the Faculty will be offering “Electric Mobility - Fundamentals of EV Technologies.” Considered a pioneering initiative, this new offering seeks to expose UWI graduates to the future of sustainable transportation.

Dr. Michelle McLeod, a Senior Lecturer at The University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica, has unveiled groundbreaking research shedding light on the intricacies of policy-making within the Caribbean tourism community. Titled ‘Tourism policy networks in four Caribbean countries,’ the paper delves into the dynamics of formal power and its influence on policy roles among tourism actors in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
