A Week of Gifts!

It was a great week for gifts to the UWI Museum. Small gifts in some ways, but big in thoughtfulness and trust and content.

A-V: Saving the Film

A 1953 promotional film on the University College of the West Indies (UCWI) plays in the UWI Museum, but the story of how we come to have the film at all is also worth noting. We’ve put that story right beside the film so you can see – and we’re also sharing it here.
It’s saying that recording events for the future is only one step. How we maintain accessibility to that material is also important – whether the material is in the library, the archive, the recording studio, the home or elsewhere.

FINDING NUGGETS

PAN GOES TO COLLEGE: Update and Sound!

We’ve been working to get the timeline straight for the story of how both steel bands and carnival evolved at the Mona, Jamaica regional hub that was the University College of the West Indies, popularly known as ‘UC’, in the 1950s; and to capture some of the voices.  A cameo exhibition last year was a work-in-progress, and since then we’ve been able to bring more people into the conversation.
