UWI Mona Law and Howard Law’s Scholarly Writing Exchange

On November 10, 2020, five students from UWI Mona Law and Howard Law participated in a Scholarly Writing Exchange where they presented on the scholarly papers they are working on. 

This exchange is a part of the Howard-UWI student exchange.  The idea was conceived by PVC Bernal and later memorialized in the UWI/Howard Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2017; a list of the students who participated in Virtual Scholarly Exchange follows below.  Dr Ramona Biholar (UWI) and Professor ShaShana Crichton (Howard) organized the event and served as commentors.

GRADUATION CEREMONIES WILL BE HELD IN 2021

The UWI has taken a decision to postpone all graduation ceremonies to January 2021. This is in accordance with its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So no campuses will stage the Annual Graduation Ceremonies as is usually done in October/November but will instead do so in January 2021.

Dean Michael Salmon

Michael G. Salmon, M.Sc. has been appointed by Marymount Manhattan College President Kerry Walk to the role of Assistant Vice President/Dean of Academic Excellence and Senior Advisor to the President.

Michael was born and raised in Jamaica. He was the first in his family to attend college.

Rowana-Kay Campbell Becomes First Jamaican to be Awarded Prestigious Oxford Scholarship

The University of Oxford in Oxfordshire, England is one of the oldest and most prestigious learning institutions in the world and Jamaican Rowana-Kay Campbell will soon be walking its hallowed halls. She’s the first Jamaican to be awarded the Oxford-ID Travel Group Foundation Bonham Carter Scholarship to the university.

Pelican Soaring!

Alicia M. Ward, MD, family medicine, has joined Southeast Health Westgate Clinic. The Westgate Clinic is part of the Southeast Health Medical Group, which is the largest multispecialty group in the region.

Dr. Ward comes to Dothan from Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare in Tallahassee, Florida, where she completed her residency in Family Medicine. Before coming to Tallahassee, she worked in her native Barbados providing care to underserved communities. She also served as a clinical medical officer with the Ministry of Health in Bridgetown, Barbados.

UWIAA CHTM Chapter Formed

The alumni of the Centre for Hotel and Tourism Management (CHTM) recently officially formed their Chapter, having registered it with the IAD. As a precursor event they hosted a CHTM Virtual Reunion, entitled Roundtable Conversations which featured timely Covid-19 solutions-oriented discussions. The Caribbean is one of the world’s most tourism dependent regions and the participants welcomed the UWI Chancellor, Robert Bermudez and the Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI, Mrs.

Judge Kathy Ann Brown

UWI graduate Judge Kathy-Ann Brown has been sworn in as a member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. She was among five judges elected at the thirtieth Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to serve a term of nine years, commencing on 1 October 2020.

Alumni Ambassador scores Chevening!

Franz George is a Lecturer, Organisational Consultant and Youth Advocate. He has lectured Sociology and Caribbean Studies at the 6th form level for the past 2 years. He is also the lead Organisational Consultant for his consultancy, Lydian Stone Consulting. Through his consultancy, he helps organisations to identify their problems, and helps them to develop and implement interventions. Franz is also very passionate about youth advocacy. Since 2018, he has been serving as the Caribbean and Americas Region Representative of the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC).

Bahamian Medic remembered

Dr. Phillip Thompson was a 1975 graduate of The University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Dr. Thompson wasted no time in returning to the West Indies from Scotland in 1983, then becoming the preeminent General Surgeon in the Bahamas in the later years of the 20th Century.

New Campus Registrar for Cave Hill

The UWI Cave Hill Campus has announced that Mr. Rommel Carter, who was the Director of Human Resources at Cave Hill, has been appointed to the post of Campus Registrar. He is also a proud UWI graduate

UWI Lawyers and Medics – check this out!

Given the international concerns and reactions that arose in relation to George Floyd’s  death, the opportunity to host a series of online events to highlight the forensic pathology issues associated with the investigation of Deaths in Custody presented itself and a trilogy of symposia was conceptualised and planned by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Washington, DC who were to otherwise host a previously planned in-person conference in Washington in June 2020.

Pamela Coke-Hamilton

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced that UWI alumna, Pamela Coke-Hamilton has been appointed as the Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC), which is the joint agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) for trade and international business development.

She holds an undergraduate degree in international relations from The UWI and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University
