Earth Day 2012 will be celebrated throughout the world on April 22nd, and is themed Mobilize the Earth. Following this theme, the Environmental Committee mobilized The UWI St. Augustine Campus towards a plastic and Styrofoam free environment through their Earth Day 2012 Pledge and the planting of a Samaan Tree.

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157629468853142/{/gallery} The Office of Graduate Studies and Research at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus, hosted a Postgraduate Open Day on Saturday 14th April, 2012, from 9 am to 5 pm, at the JFK Auditorium and Lecture Theatre.

The event showed the public how pursuing a postgraduate degree with The University of the West Indies (UWI) can expose them to new ideas through UWI’s innovative postgraduate taught and research programmes; exploration by developing expertise in several areas including Agriculture, Engineering, Social Sciences, Medicine, Business, the Arts, Education, Literature and Language; the great possibilities garnered by participating in collaborative international and local projects that are making a difference across the globe; and to the world by providing opportunities to collaborate with academics, researchers and intellectuals from more than 100 international universities and colleges.

During the Open Day, visitors had the opportunity to visit booths set up by the Faculties of Humanities and Education, Medical Sciences, Engineering, Science and Agriculture and Social Sciences, as well as the Institute of International Relations (IIR), the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) and the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (ALJGSB).

They also attended sessions which provided information on new and existing programmes at each of the Faculties and Institutes listed above.

Professorial Inaugural Lecture delivered by Professor Hariharan Seetharaman

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157629468354030/{/gallery} The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, hosted the Professorial Inaugural Lecture of Professor Hariharan Seetharaman on Thursday 12th April, 2012, at 5.30pm, at Amphitheatre A, Faculty of Medical Sciences,Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt. Hope.

A Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at The UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Seetharaman’s expansive research in the area of critical care led him to question the role of the healthcare system in the death of a patient. In his inaugural lecture, “Keeping ICU patients alive – at all costs?” Professor Seetharaman will explore issues including, what the performance markers of a healthcare unit are, whether ‘death in a hospital’ can be interpreted as a failure of the healthcare system, the concept of ‘death’ in contemporary society, the role of life-support technology in medically futile patients and how cost influences the decision-making process.

Professor Seetharaman is also the Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at The UWI’s St. Augustine Campus, and the Director of Operating Theatres, at the EWMSC.
