UWI STAT MONA hosts Corporate Link Up

CORPORATE LINK UP 2018

 

On Thursday, February 8, 2018, the UWI STAT family kick-started the second semester with a Corporate Link Up to mark the UWI's 70th Anniversary. This took place in the Aleem Mohammed Room of the UWI Regional Headquarters. Discussions centred around the theme: "General Habits for Success".

Alumni all over the globe started celebrating the70th Anniversary of their University in January 2018. Alumni in Trinidad and Tobago got together and supported the UWI Fete, in Washington DC they gathered to socialize and spread Pelican and Caribbean Pride and in Anguilla, Jamaica and Belize they celebrated first in Church and then with camaraderie and “eats”.

Pelican Cedric Gayle authors History of the UWIAA New York Chapter

UWI Alumnus Cedric Gayle visited the UWI Regional Headquarters on December 11, 2017 and presented a copy of the History of the Formation of the UWI Alumni Association New York Chapter to the Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI, Celia Davidson Francis which he compiled and authored. He acknowledges the assistance of Leo Chambers, Marjorie Seeberan, Lillith Parks, Anthony Belinfanti, Dr Kathleen Watson and Drs Hazel Carter and Gerald White-Davis, as well as his daughter Janelle and wife Heather.

Leighton McKnight CD

UWI Alumnus and chartered accountant Leighton McKnight CD, has received the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica Distinguished Member Award for 2017 for sterling contribution to the accountancy profession and nation building. He is greatly admired for his philanthropy and community service by his fellow UWI Pelicans in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean; and in 2013, he was honoured by the Government of Jamaica with the Order of Distinction, Commander Class for Public Service, Philanthropy and Community Service.

Alumni and the Triple A Plan: How you can be involved in the UWI’s Triple A Strategic Plan as a graduate

We wish graduates to know HOW they can be INTEGRALLY ENGAGED and participate in this strategic process. The Triple A plan has three main headings under which alumni may be engaged and involved in the life of their campus and university. Here are just some examples of how you can participate:

OC Hosts Inaugural Pelican Award

The inaugural OC Pelican Award was presented in Grenada, to two outstanding Governors General who were both delighted to accept their awards

H. E. Dame Cecile La Grenade of Grenada was presented her award by Dr. Luz Longsworth, PVC and Principal of the Open Campus.

H.E. Sir Samuel Tapley Seaton of St. Kitts and Nevis was presented his award by Celia Davidson Francis, the Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI. 

They were recognised based on their outstanding accomplishments, as well as their invaluable contributions to their nations.

Open Campus Presidents’ Retreat

The Open Campus Presidents held a successful Alumni Retreat, organized and funded by them, which highlighted the importance of alumni engagement in the life of each UWI campus and OC site and emphasised the various ways that alumni globally can be involved through the UWI Triple A 2017- 22 Strategic. It was extremely productive and underscored the effectiveness of face to face meetings, especially in the areas of camaraderie building, brainstorming, foresighting and sharing of ideas and best practices.

This Reunion was wonderful! 

In fact it was so successful, all the graduates who attended have said they are going to get together every 2 years from now on!

Professor Rosemary Moodie

Professor Rosemary Moodie MBBS ’82 (Department of Paediatrics University of Toronto and Inaugural Board Director of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital) has been honoured as the 2017 Order of Distinction in the Rank of Commander by the Government of Jamaica for outstanding contribution in philanthropy, community development and medicine in the Jamaican Diaspora in Canada. She is Senior Accreditor with Accreditation Canada and has led the YWCA Toronto to open Canada’s largest affordable housing program for low-income women and women fleeing violence.

Alumni Ambassador at Oxford on Rhodes Scholarship

 Alumni Ambassador Simone Delzin says  " I'm thinking about you and UWI STAT always here in Oxford- it has been an incredible experience so far. My mind is opening more and more to the diversity of the world's people, talents and treasures. It has been like a little bubble of time for me to reflect and generate new ideas, do things I would've never tried otherwise and make invaluable connections. Class of 1967 successfully celebrated their 50th Anniversary

The Class of 1967 successfully celebrated their 50th Anniversary in Sept 2017 and the first event – A Forum on Engagementf or the Future Development of The UWI: Harnessing the Power of the Alumni"  was well attended and produced valuable information.

HURRICANE IRMA ASSISTANCE

Help our Caribbean brothers and sisters through Alumni Online. UWI Pelicans, many of our sister Caribbean countries were devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017. The alumni are involved in supporting them and in rebuilding the UWI Open Campus sites that will ensure that excellent tertiary education remains available. To assist please donate.

The UWIAA Welcomes Chancellor Bermudez

The UWI alumni were represented at the Chancellor’s Installation. Mr. Craig Tuckett, the UWIAA Council Representative (2017-2018) delivered the Greeting of behalf of the UWIAA at the Installation Ceremony.

Dr Carissa F. Etienne

UWI alumna and Dominican, Dr. Carissa F. Etienne has been re-elected for a second five-year term as Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) by the Member States of the organization and she will assume her second term on February 1, 2018.

The University of The West Indies to Host the Inaugural Lecture of the Eastern Caribbean Lecture Series in Saint Lucia

The UWI Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), Cave Hill Campus, in collaboration with The UWI Open Campus (OC), will on 14th September, 2017 host the Inaugural Lecture of the Eastern Caribbean Public Lecture Series in Saint Lucia.
Entitled “Invented Nations and Imagined Communities: 50 Years of Self Government in the OECS”, the lecture will be delivered by Dr Lennox Honychurch, distinguished Caribbean academic, anthropologist, historian, archaeologist, conservationist and writer. 

UWI Alumni Advocates eager to increase alumni engagement

The University of the West Indies has been increasing alumni engagement over the past 10 years and will augment involvement as it approaches its 70th Anniversary in 2018. The Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI, based at the UWI Regional Headquarters, Celia Davidson Francis, has been working strategically to raise awareness about the importance of Alumni Relations.
