Pete the Pelican has become an unofficial symbol of the UWI and the label ‘Pelicans’ has started to attach to a lot of teams at the university. But the first promotional use of the university’s crest seems to date back to February 1951, when the students of the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI) attached the name to their new student publication.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce that the Government of Saint Lucia will host the annual meetings of the Technical Advisory Committees (TACs) to the Grants Committees of The UWI. These meetings will be held at the Bay Gardens Hotel, Rodney Bay Village, on February 20-21, 2017.
Guyana’s former Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Noel Sinclair, has passed away. He was one of Guyana’s finest Diplomats. His career was spent almost entirely within the Diplomatic Service, the exception being a brief stint at Central High School.
UWI Honorary Graduate Calypso Rose won the prestigious Victoire de la Musique award for best World Music Album of the Year in Paris France on February 10, 2017. She is the first Caribbean artist to win this award which is the French equivalent of an American Grammy Award. It is the most prestigious music award in France, voted by a panel of more than 1200 industry professionals, and awarded by the French Ministry of Culture. The British Foundation for the University of the West Indies (BFUWI) will be holding a fundraising musical event at Inner Temple to raise funds for our educational outreach work in the UK and for bursaries for students at our campuses in the Caribbean. The event continues the celebration of 50 years of independence achieved by Guyana and Barbados in 2016 and recognises that this year Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago will celebrate 55 years of self-rule.
The critically acclaimed ‘Inspirational Chorale’ from the University of Arkansas, USA, will be giving a benefit performance during its one-week tour of Jamaica on Sunday, March 19 th at the University Chapel beginning at 5:00 p.m.
UWI alumna Dr. Sharon Marshall is an award-winning journalist and public relations professional. She holds a Masters in English and a PhD in History from the UWI. She has served in senior management positions as Director of News and Current Affairs with the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation and as Manager, Programme Operations with the Caribbean Broadcasting Union. The highlight of her broadcasting career remains an exclusive television interview with Fidel Castro.
