Asha-Gaye Cowell, PM's Youth Awardee in Leadership for 2019

On November 30, 2019, out of eleven nominees, Asha-Gaye Cowell, UWI STAT Alumni Ambassador and Past President, was one of three awardees of the Prime Minister’s National Youth Awards for Excellence for the category of Leadership. Nominations were open to all Jamaican nationals between 15-29 years old, who are living in Jamaica and the Diaspora, and who have attained excellence and world-class achievement. Asha-Gaye who was also the recipient of the 2019 Governor-General Achievement Award for Excellence for the Parish of St.

Management Studies BSc. class of 1980 hosts reunion - May 22-24, 2020.

Graduates from the 1980 Bachelor of Science (BSc.) class of Management Studies will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary since graduating from The UWI by having a Reunion on the weekend of May 22-24, 2020.

Chancellor's Medal to Sir Roy Augier

The Chancellor's Medal was conferred on Sir Roy Augier to a packed house at the UWI Regional Headquarters on Friday, January 17, 2020.

Dr. Ron Darbeau

Dr. Ron Darbeau who is currently Dean of the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Interim Dean of the College of Health Sciences, will step down on June 1, 2020 in order to serve as Provost and Vice President for academic affairs at Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. He is a UWI graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from The UWI, St Augustine campus, in his native Trinidad, followed by a Master of Science and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University.

Youth Security the focus of The UWI Open Campus Belize Country Conference 2019

A two-day conference focusing on youths is underway in Belize City was held on Nov 5, 2019. It was hosted by The UWI through its 2019 Belize Country Conference which stimulated discussion related to the topic area: “Youth and Security: Assessing Risks, Mitigating Vulnerabilities, and Improving Wellbeing.”  Issues of gender and equality, youth security and mental health all critical areas that impact the young and vulnerable population were discussed.  

The UWIAA Florida Chapter – invites you to share in their December plans

As the holiday season begins, the board of UWIAA Florida Chapter wishes for you and your family a happy holiday season. Because this season of joy and goodwill would not be the same without getting together, UWI Pelicans who will be in Florida are invited to a Christmas Social on December 13, 2019. There is no charge to attend, but attendees will have the option to support the Chapter’s local outreach and make a donation and are invited to so – and may choose to support one of the following in the spirit of the season:

Filmmaker Franklyn ‘Chappie’ St Juste – remembered

Franklyn ‘Chappie’ St Juste, a master film-maker who positively impacted professionals throughout Caribbean media and culture fraternities was celebrated for his contribution and influence at the UWI Mona Chapel on November 25, 2019. He taught at the Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at the UWI Mona Campus for many years and was behind major film productions The Harder They Come in the 1970s, Children of Babylon, almost a decade later, and the short film The Cool Boys.

UWI STAT Mona Corps

Members of the UWI STAT Mona Corps Executive, as well as Ambassadors Designate, as a part of their National Visit mandate, were hosted by the Jamaican Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Information, the Hon. Alando Terrelonge. These visits aim to highlight this Corps of young leaders to the regional governments and the role of UWI STAT in enhancing the Mission of UWI, through national and regional mandates, as well as to promote the Climate Change Advocacy Network and to seek synergies with various government ministries.

Thousands Run or Walk for Student Scholarships at CB UWI5K

The CB UWI 5K took place successfully on November 10, 2019. The event always results in scholarships for the students of the UWI Mona Campus.

The UWI’s Dr. David C. Smith among Scientists who prepared the first Sustainable Development Report

Dr. David C. Smith, Coordinator of the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD) and Director of the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), is one of 15 independent scientists who prepared the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR). This inaugural global report, commissioned by the United Nations Secretary General, was launched last month ahead of the 2019 SDG Summit.

2019 Research Days held (UWI SCMR - The Bahamas)

The UWI School of Clinical Medicine and Research (UWI SCMR) The Bahamas launched its research programme in 2007 with a mission “To facilitate the improvement of health of the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas through clinical research that will produce valuable knowledge for the prevention and management of diseases, and formulation of health policies and programs.” This year marks the Thirteenth Annual RBC Research Scientific Conference which has as its theme – “Modern Medicine: The Future Is Here Today!” The two-day event was held October 31 – November 1, 2019.

The Musgrave Medals Awards were established in Jamaica in 1889. This year’s recipients who were UWI Pelicans included UWI Lecturer - Dr Michael Bucknor, gold medal recipient, Scientist Professor Tara Dasgupta silver medal recipient, Publisher Shirley Carby- silver medal recipient.

UWIAA Florida Chapter supports the Jamaica Nurses Association of Florida

The President of the Jamaica Nurses Association of Florida, Joan Howard, has warmly thanked the UWIAA Florida Chapter President D. Carmen Nicholas and her team for their generous support to their Scholarship award.

The UWIAA Florida Chapter is delighted that a UWI nursing student in Jamaica will be awarded the JNAF founder Joyce Harris Wright's scholarship.

The UWI graduate family has grown - Graduation 2019!

The UWI welcomed 9,300 new graduates to the alumni family between October and November 2019. The Open Campus held its Graduation in Antigua and Barbuda and marked the start of four consecutive weeks of ceremonies across the region’s premier university. There were a total of 13 ceremonies. Among some interesting statistics on this year’s graduating class, more than two-thirds of the graduands were female; nearly 7,000 persons received undergraduate degrees, while over 2,000 were awarded graduate degrees.

50th anniversary reunion of the UWI Class of 1969

The 50th anniversary reunion of the UWI Class of 1969, which took place at the Mona Campus October 9 – 13, 2019, was an unqualified success. All the events, from the Welcome Reception and Registration on Wednesday at Alumni House, to the after-Chapel Brunch in Mary Seacole Hall on the Sunday, were enjoyed by all present.

Pelican Talks - October 22, 2019 with Professor Brian Meeks

Proud Pelican and triple UWI graduate, Professor Brian Meeks was our latest alumnus on Pelican Talks. After a long career at The UWI, he is currently the Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University. He is also a Poet, political scientist, and prolific writer.

Executive Director of the AFUWI honoured

The Executive Director of the American Foundation for the UWI, Ms. Ann Marie Grant was recognized by the Mustard Seed Communities on Sept 29, 2019 at the New York Hilton Hotel at their Annual Benefit Luncheon. She received an award for her commitment to scholarship excellence, her dedication to the advancement of the Caribbean Diaspora and her lifelong service as a community volunteer. Congratulations Ann Marie!

UWISTAT presents at the 6th Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development

Clayton Mitchell, the FST representative to the Guild of undergraduate students, recently represented the University of the West Indies and the UWISTAT (Students Today Alumni Tomorrow) Vice Chancellor's Ambassador Corps at the 6th Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development.
