The Caribbean has a lot at stake as world leaders and technical experts meet for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26. While the urgency of climate action is dire across the world, the livelihood of the Caribbean region continues to be threatened by global warming.

Nadine C. Atkinson-Flowers is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, and the Norman Manley Law School. She holds a B. A in History, a Masters in History and is a practicing attorney with almost 15 years at the public and private Bar, having been an attorney at the Director of Public Prosecutions and in private practice. She is also admitted in the USA and currently focuses on US immigration, Jamaican criminal law, real estate, family law, contracts, and the intersection of US immigration law and Jamaican law. 

Professor Patsy R. Prussia has been leading a wonderful career as early as high school where she was head girl at St. Mary’s College between 1960 and 1961, leaving a positive mark as she proceeds. She went on to continue her studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona in the Faculty of Natural Science where she studied Premedical Chemistry and Physics.

Dr. Marlene McKetty graduated from the UWI Mona Campus in 1970  with a BSc in Zoology (minor in Chemistry). The Univ of Florida Medical Physics Graduate Program has now recognised this UWI graduate with the McKetty/Butler Assistantship in honour of their 2 esteemed graduates, as Dr. McKetty went on to distinguish herself in the USA.  

Dr. McKetty served as the Chief Physician and Asst. Prof for Howard Univ Hospital in Washington DC.

She has paved the way for women of colour in Medical Physics. The Assistantship will be an annual one to an incoming female PhD student.

UWI alumnus, the Honourable Sir Hugh Rawlins is a national of St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) and a Judge of the ILO International Administrative Tribunal in Geneva, Switzerland. He assumed that Office in August 2012 upon retirement as Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court to which he was appointed in April 2008.

He received this honour at the 5th annual UWIAA SKN Global Giving and Pelican Awards event which was graciously hosted by H.E. Sir Tapley Seaton, the Governor-General on August 1, 2021. Sir Tapley is himself a Pelican Awardee.

Roy resided in Chancellor Hall and Lynette in Mary Seacole Hall.

Their story started during Fresher’s Week and continued through their years on campus. They got married in the August after Roy completed his MBBS 1974.They went back to Mona in 1975 Roy doing the DM programme in Medicine and Lynette doing her Dip. Ed. Their first daughter, Lisa was born in December 1975 and attended to Mona Heights Prep school. Lisa subsequently did medicine at Mona and got married to her classmate Patrick Magnus- another UWI couple.

UWI Mona Alumna Dr. Jascinth Lindo completed a Master's degree in Public Health (2003) and a PhD in 2012 and Masters in Nursing Education 2015 (all in the Faculty of Medical Sciences). She is a Registered Nurse.

Bennington College President Laura Walker has announced that Dr Maurice Hall has been appointed provost of the college. He will assume this position on July 28.  She noted that “Dr. Maurice Hall brings deep academic experience, a passion for Bennington College’s mission and pedagogy, and a strategic perspective to the Provost position.”

The first ever Global UWI Alumni Day was held virtually on June 26, 2021 and was deemed a great success and extremely enjoyable by all those who attended. This special DAY has been introduced to celebrate, recognise and appreciate UWI graduates who through their professional accomplishments contribute to the Caribbean region and the world in many spheres and at many levels; and also play a major role in enhancing the University’s reputation.
