Michael Morrissey, UWIAA Contact in Asia publishes his new book "Breadfruit Stories"

Michael Morrissey is a researcher, educator, and writer from Jamaica, now living and publishing from his new home in Bali, Indonesia.

He is an honorary professor of The University of the West Indies, where he earned postgraduate degrees and taught for nearly 30 years. For the last 25 years, he has been providing analytical services in many countries across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean in the field of primary and secondary education development. He is author of many geography and social studies textbooks for Caribbean schools.

UWI Scientists make representation for CARICOM as the world meets for COP26

The Caribbean has a lot at stake as world leaders and technical experts meet for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26. While the urgency of climate action is dire across the world, the livelihood of the Caribbean region continues to be threatened by global warming.

Jihan Williams writes first book titled "Lifting the Weight of Miscarriage: Healing Insights on Pregnancy Loss for Sufferers and the People Around Us"

 In 2001 Miss Jihan Williams pursued Management Studies with the UWI Distance Program in St Kitts before enrolling at Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies in 2002 to pursue her Bachelor of Laws degree.  She successfully graduated with honours in 2005 and went on to attain a Legal Education Certificate in 2007 from the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica. She is the current Registrar, Intellectual Property Office at Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, and was elected the president of the UWI Alumni Association St.

Nadine C. Atkinson-Flowers writes new legal book "On Your Feet: Criminal Practice in the Jamaican Parish Courts"

Nadine C. Atkinson-Flowers is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, and the Norman Manley Law School. She holds a B. A in History, a Masters in History and is a practicing attorney with almost 15 years at the public and private Bar, having been an attorney at the Director of Public Prosecutions and in private practice. She is also admitted in the USA and currently focuses on US immigration, Jamaican criminal law, real estate, family law, contracts, and the intersection of US immigration law and Jamaican law. 

Professor Patsy R. Prussia receives The Gold Crown of Merit Award

Professor Patsy R. Prussia has been leading a wonderful career as early as high school where she was head girl at St. Mary’s College between 1960 and 1961, leaving a positive mark as she proceeds. She went on to continue her studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona in the Faculty of Natural Science where she studied Premedical Chemistry and Physics.

UWI tourism stalwart honoured

Nicola Madden-Greig has been honoured by the Government of Jamaica with a national honour: the Order of Distinction (Officer Class). A decades-long veteran of the tourism industry, she was honoured with the 2019 Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) President’s Award.

She is a past president of the JHTA and current fifth Vice President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), and she is the only two-time recipient of the prestigious award. Notably, she is one of only three women to have served as JHTA President in the organization’s 60+ years in operation.

UWI Alumna Dr. Marlene McKetty has Assistantship named in her honour

Dr. Marlene McKetty graduated from the UWI Mona Campus in 1970  with a BSc in Zoology (minor in Chemistry). The Univ of Florida Medical Physics Graduate Program has now recognised this UWI graduate with the McKetty/Butler Assistantship in honour of their 2 esteemed graduates, as Dr. McKetty went on to distinguish herself in the USA.  

Dr. McKetty served as the Chief Physician and Asst. Prof for Howard Univ Hospital in Washington DC.

She has paved the way for women of colour in Medical Physics. The Assistantship will be an annual one to an incoming female PhD student.

UWI Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Professor E. Nigel Harris was awarded the Erwin Neter Award

UWI Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Professor E. Nigel Harris was awarded the Erwin Neter Award for lifetime achievement in research by the Association of Medical and Laboratory Immunologists (AMLI) on August 14, 2021, in Austin, Texas.

In addition to receiving the award, which has been given to leading scientists in the field of immunology and microbiology since 1987, Professor Harris was invited to give a presentation on his work on anti-phospholipid antibodies and the antiphospholipid syndrome over nearly 40 years.

Sir Hugh Rawlins receives 2021 UWIAA SKN Pelican Award

UWI alumnus, the Honourable Sir Hugh Rawlins is a national of St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) and a Judge of the ILO International Administrative Tribunal in Geneva, Switzerland. He assumed that Office in August 2012 upon retirement as Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court to which he was appointed in April 2008.

He received this honour at the 5th annual UWIAA SKN Global Giving and Pelican Awards event which was graciously hosted by H.E. Sir Tapley Seaton, the Governor-General on August 1, 2021. Sir Tapley is himself a Pelican Awardee.

UWI Couple: Dr. Roy K. Tilluckdharry and Mrs. Lynette Tilluckdharry

Wedding Date/Anniversary: Sat, 08/24/1974
Roy resided in Chancellor Hall and Lynette in Mary Seacole Hall.

Their story started during Fresher’s Week and continued through their years on campus. They got married in the August after Roy completed his MBBS 1974.They went back to Mona in 1975 Roy doing the DM programme in Medicine and Lynette doing her Dip. Ed. Their first daughter, Lisa was born in December 1975 and attended to Mona Heights Prep school. Lisa subsequently did medicine at Mona and got married to her classmate Patrick Magnus- another UWI couple.

Dr. Jascinth Lindo Receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Bahamas

UWI Mona Alumna Dr. Jascinth Lindo completed a Master's degree in Public Health (2003) and a PhD in 2012 and Masters in Nursing Education 2015 (all in the Faculty of Medical Sciences). She is a Registered Nurse.

UWI graduate Dr Maurice Hall named provost of Bennington College

Bennington College President Laura Walker has announced that Dr Maurice Hall has been appointed provost of the college. He will assume this position on July 28.  She noted that “Dr. Maurice Hall brings deep academic experience, a passion for Bennington College’s mission and pedagogy, and a strategic perspective to the Provost position.”

UWIAA Incoming Alumni and Council Representatives

Craig Tuckett will be the 2021- 23 Alumni Representative and will serve for two years. Dwayne Haynes will be the 2021-22 Council Representative and will serve for one year. Both appointments are effective August 1, 2021. They will serve on the University Finance and General Purposes Committee, University Appointments Committee and the University Council; will give input from the alumni perspective and will liaise with the Director of Alumni Relations, Institutional Advancement Division (IAD) to promote alumni engagement and philanthropy.

Report from the first ever Global UWI Alumni Day

The first ever Global UWI Alumni Day was held virtually on June 26, 2021 and was deemed a great success and extremely enjoyable by all those who attended. This special DAY has been introduced to celebrate, recognise and appreciate UWI graduates who through their professional accomplishments contribute to the Caribbean region and the world in many spheres and at many levels; and also play a major role in enhancing the University’s reputation.

UWI’s first graduate to be called passes – Mr. Roy Bailey

UWI alumnus Roy Bailey had, and continues to have, a historic place in the University’s history as he was the first person to be called and thus the first person to receive a UWI degree at the first graduation ceremony. In 1949, Roy Bailey won a Government of Jamaica Exhibition Scholarship to the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI) which later became The UWI, to read for a BSc Degree in Natural Sciences
