The University of the West Indies

On This Day – 66 years ago

On January 5, 1949, the Royal Charter of the University College of the West Indies (UCWI) – which would become the University of the West Indies in 1962 – was sealed. This process of making an impression of the British monarch’s official Seal, and attaching it to the relevant document by a woven cord, made official a decision taken by King George VI on December 22, 1948.

Let’s Harvest Memories in 2016

The To-Do list for 2016 is already stretching, but it’s clear that a major focus for the New Year must be to harvest memories, even as we engage with our various stakeholders. Now that the UWI is approaching its seventh decade, it is also in a period when there are fewer and fewer alumni and retirees from the pioneering years to help us fill gaps in the record.

GUEST POST: Again ‘Facing the Challenge of a New Age’; Reflecting on 50 years after Martin Luther King in Jamaica

GUEST POST by Dr E. Anthony Allen
I entered the University of the West Indies in 1960 as a medical student. This fledgling institution was then only twelve years old. During my time there I had the privilege of associating with other ‘students of the sixties’. As we walked the campus paths we prepared ourselves and dreamed of a future. Eventually, together with staff, relatives and well-wishers, we gathered in the Assembly Hall in June 1965 for a very special Valedictory Service. The Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would deliver the sermon.

CHURCHES AT UWI MONA

Within a couple of years of the University (College) of the West Indies starting up in 1948, officials of the Anglican and Catholic communities were proposing the establishment of separate church facilities on the Mona campus site where the regional university was founded in Jamaica. In 1951, the college was already leaning towards establishing a single non-denominational place of worship. This would come to pass with the completion of the re-located and re-purposed Georgian rum storehouse, dedicated in 1960 and now known widely as the University Chapel.
