The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta

The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta will take place at the Two Seasons Guest House in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth on that date and we hope all literary aficionados will be there!

Organised in collaboration with the Department of Literatures in English (DLIE) at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies and the Gloria Lyn Memorial Fund (GLMF), the Fiesta is a family-oriented day, immersing participants in the written and spoken word.


UWI Hon Grad Dr. Shirley Thompson honoured!

Dr. Shirley J. Thompson proudly received an Honorary Doctorate from The UWI on November 2, 2018. She was delighted to be conferred this honour by UWI Chancellor. The QUEEN’S 2019 NEW YEARS HONOURS LIST was announced and she has been awarded an OBE for Services to Music. The UWI congratulates her on this latest achievement!

Luck? UWIAA Australia Contact Charles Ball was prompted to ask about a Jamaican cap – and found out he was speaking to former UWIAA Washington DC Chapter President, Sha-Shana Crichton, who was visiting Sydney.

Alumni and members of the UWIAA New York Chapter support to the work of the AFUWI, in its significant efforts to raise funds to provide scholarships for students in financial need at the UWI’s 4 campuses in 17 Caribbean countries.


Taylor – the champion of Climate Science

UWI alumnus, climate scientist Professor Michael Taylor of The UWI, Mona campus, has been named among the 2019 laureates for the Anthony N. Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence. He has done outstanding work in the area of climate change, including being the lead author of The Global Warming of 1.5°C Report 1.5°C was officially released during the 48th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in Incheon, Republic of Korea in October 2018.

The UWI and University of Johannesburg launch Institute for Global African Affairs

A joint master's degree programme in Global African Studies is one of the major initiatives which will be offered by the new Institute for Global African Affairs—a collaborative effort between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa.

The late Margaret Barrett dedicated a large part of her life doing voluntary work that helped individuals in meaningful ways. Her efforts assisted individuals who sought to better themselves through education, with many of these individuals attending the University of the West Indies.
