Proud UWI alumni Donat and Cecille Grant presented the Director of Alumni Relations for the regional UWI, Celia Davidson Francis with a US$8,000.00 cheque to launch the Missions for Health (M4H) Dental Scholarship, tenable at the Mona Campus on October 4, 2019.
UWI STAT Alumni Ambassador Mr.Tijani Christian has been appointed as a member to the Global Board of Generation Unlimited by Executive Director of UNICEF, Ms. Henrietta H. Fore.
UNICEF and its partners launched Generation Unlimited (GenU) as a multi-sectoral global partnership to help young people aged, 10 - 24, become productive problem-solvers and members of society. By bridging secondary-age education and training to employment and entrepreneurship, the partnership has and will support every young person to thrive in the world of work.
The UWI Alumni Relations and Alumni Chapters and the Alumni Relations arm of the Institutional Advancement Division (IAD-AR) launched their partnership with YoPro Global Foundation on the first Soft & Life Skills series for students and alumni across all campuses Caribbean-wide on September 19, 2019.
UWI Chancellor Bermudez hosted a packed to capacity Chancellor’s Conversation with alumni and future alumni (students) with the theme: One University, A Family of Graduates – Building Nations with Global Impact in the Bahamas. The Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI Celia Davidson Francis also visited The Bahamas along with the Chancellor. The interactive discussion was spirited and focused on solutions and recommendations to challenges as well as ways to promote the UWI and its graduates and the betterment of the Caribbean.
UWI STAT Alumni Ambassador and UWI graduate Jeffrey Foreman serves as crown counsel in the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Division of the Attorney General's Chambers. In this capacity he provides legal advice on matters relating to the drafting and enactment of legislation, which has included work in areas ranging from data privacy and protection to occupational safety and health, and national security. He also provides advice concerning the interpretation of the Constitution of Jamaica.
As of August 19, 2019 Richard Byles is the Governor of Jamaica’s central bank, Bank of Jamaica (BOJ). He will head the Bank’s Board of Directors, as well as act in the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Bank.
Many of you sent contributions to help Brittany try to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the Pan American Games by going to the Qualifiers in Guatemala City, on May 24th and 25th. She tried her very best, but unfortunately was not selected. Despite this disappointment, she gained great experience from playing among the best. She did however lead the St. Augustine Table Tennis team to win that category at the 2109 UWI Games and she also won the award for Most Valuable Player in Table Tennis there.
UWI alumnus Michael Flanigan is pleased to share that he earned my PhD from Seton Hall University in New Jersey, USA. The topic of his dissertation is: Black Middle Class Parental Investment In Their Children's Higher Education. See link below. The UWI Global Giving Week Initiative started August 1- 7, 2016, under the theme “Emancipate. Educate. Donate.” The UWI Global Giving Campaign is a key fundraising initiative to which all alumni, friends and supporters are urged to give back and donate to the University.
Catherine Pollard appointed as UN undersecretary-general for management strategy, policy and compliance
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Catherine Pollard of Guyana as the next undersecretary-general for management strategy, policy and compliance.
Pollard will succeed Jan Beagle of New Zealand to whom the secretary-general is deeply grateful for her extraordinary work in management reform in the UN system and 40 years of dedicated service to the organization, according to a press note from the UN chief's office.
Dr Shazeeda Ali, who graduated from the UWI Law Faculty, shares that her four older brothers are graduates of the Medical Faculty at Mona and that her father is also a graduate of the medical faculty at Mona. Wonderful!

Dr. Lalor is a distinguished Honorary Grad of the UWI and is therefore considered an alumnus. He is the holder of the prestigious Order of Jamaica he is also a Chartered Insurer and is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Company of the West Indies (better known as ICWI) Group Limited and its subsidiaries and now Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Carlyle Brewster, Professor of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Professor Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. He obtained his bachelor's degree from The UWI and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
UWI Pelican Antonia Charlemagne-Marshall is a UWI Cave Hill graduate of the Class of 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Management and a Master of Science degree in International Management (2008). She is pursuing a master of arts in archives and record management (first cohort) at The UWI and is a 2019 recipient of the Harold T. Pinkett Minority Student Award given by the Society of American Archivists (SAA).
Dr Gail Kerr is the 16th Annual Myron L. Weisfeldt Distinguished Visiting Professor in Diversity, 2019 for the Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine Diversity Council and the School of Medicine and she was the featured speaker at Medical Grand Rounds on February 1, 2019.
Ferdinand Fortune, UWIAA Toronto Chairperson (left) was happy to meet Dr Ludlow Burke (centre), a member of the first UWI class of 33 students, whom he met at the Medical Alumni Luncheon in Toronto two weeks ago. Dr. Burke graduated in 1954 with an MBBS. At right is Dr Edourd “Eddie” Armour from Dominica, a UWI Mona 1961 medical graduate. The luncheon was a wonderful affair, allowing alumni from all faculties to reconnect and bond.
The UWI and Caribbean Military Academy (CMA) now have a memorandum of understanding where the University will assist the Academy with programme development.
UWI Pelican, Senator the Honourable Pearnel P. Charles Jr., the Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC) led a High Level Panel on Tourism as the Driver of Sustainable Ocean Health and Ocean Wealth in the Uncut Conversations: Conversations on Climate Change Series put on by the Climate Change Division of the MEGJC on May 9, 2019, in which he underscored the importance of involving inter-sectorial communication and partnerships to prepare for and mitigate against the impacts of climate change.
