The University of the West Indies

FIRST PELICAN

Pete the Pelican has become an unofficial symbol of the UWI and the label ‘Pelicans’ has started to attach to a lot of teams at the university. But the first promotional use of the university’s crest seems to date back to February 1951, when the students of the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI) attached the name to their new student publication.

UWI&The1960s: THE CLR JAMES MOMENT!

CLR James has been the focus of our latest UWI and the 1960s occasional series – in which the University of the West Indies Museum and the UWI Mona’s Department of History & Archaeology explore the university’s connections with regional and international philosophies and icons during that dynamic decade.

3-D ON A BUDGET FOR MUSEUMS & COMMUNITIES: Slideshow!

3-D technologies were the order of the day when the UWI Museum hosted facilitators from the University of St Andrews in Scotland who were in the Caribbean conducting workshops under a project aimed at community museums in Europe and Latin America & the Caribbean. The project is titled EULAC Museums and the University of the West Indies is one of several partners.

CHECK OUT GIRVAN ON CLR JAMES!

The UWI Museum & the UWI Mona’s Department of History & Archaeology birthed it’s UWI and the 1960s series in 2015 to explore the regional university’s connections with the iconic people and philosophies emerging from this decade of ferment, a half century ago.
