UWI Pelican Chelsea Mai, a Belizean, has been awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to obtain her International Masters in Security, Intelligence, and Strategic studies.The scholarship is fully funded by the European Commission’s Education Audiovisual and Cultural Executive Agency (EACEA). She has a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the UWI, Mona Campus.
UWI alumna, Juline E. Mills, Ph.D has been appointed as Westfield State College’s interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. She currently serves as dean of Westfield State’s College of Education, Health, and Human Services. She will succeed the University’s current Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert Kersting, Ph.D., who recently announced his retirement following 25 years of service to the University.
Dr. Krystal-Jane Verasammy, a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Association for Psychologists, as well as the British Psychological Society took her oath of office as a Member of the Equal Opportunity Commission before Her Excellency Paula-Mae Weekes, ORTT, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on May 25, 2021. We recognise the important contribution she makes to improving the mental health of her patients in Trinidad and Tobago.
The UWI Medical Alumni Association Central Florida Chapter has awarded the 2021 Hardat Sukhdeo scholarship, which has been awarded since 2018 to honor the outstanding 1962 UWI medical graduate who had a distinguished Psychiatric career. It is worth US$1,500.00.
Applicants had to write an essay on the topic: “The perception, need and role of Psychiatrists in Jamaica", most of which were very good and some excellent.
The Class of 1967 was represented by Lorna Parkins, who presented their annual scholarship to Miss Taneille Donald, now a third year Civil Engineering student. After months of delay occasioned by the pandemic, the Faculty of Engineering, Mona, held its Annual Awards Ceremony for 2019/2020, virtually, on Thursday, 29 April, 2021. She received a cheque for $100,00.00, a plaque memorializing the event (funded so far and for another three years with a late Class Gift donation), and a citation.
The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI), and UWItv will host a virtual roundtable in celebration of the National Caribbean American Heritage Month in the US, on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 7:00- 8:30pm (EDT). The theme of the roundtable is “Reparatory Justice & Economic Equity for the African & Caribbean Diaspora…If Not Now…When?”
The 2021 Annual General Meeting was held via Zoom on May 2nd for public health reasons.
A tribute to Dr Badri RIckhi was made by Dr Tex Kissoon, recognising his work in psychiatry, particularly in integrative psychology.
Dr Kissoon presented the award virtually and Dr Rickhi accepted it and expressed gratitude.
Dr. Rickhi is a psychiatrist with additional training in traditional Chinese, Tibetan, Ayurvedic and Ryodoraku medicine as well as functional, energy and quantum physics medicine.

Dianne E. Young graduated from UWI in St. Augustine campus in 1985 with a BA in Spanish and Social Sciences. She has warm memories of studying at the library and Language Department and Arts Building. She participated in drama, dance and the Parang group. As a language student she traveled with a professor Sylvia Moody and a group of language students to immerse in the culture of Panama and Costa Rica. She completed a Master’s degree also from Hunter College and was offered a full time position at one of the Ivy League Universities in the USA.
Professor Emeritus Rainford Wilks has made a call for strategies to be implemented to strengthen the research culture and promote research productivity at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has described the University as “among the best universities in the West”. Sir Hilary was speaking during a presentation as keynote speaker at last week’s gathering of the Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA). The 190-member body for senior University managers (Registrars, Chief Operating Officers, and Heads of Administration) in the UK and Ireland, with Associate Members in other countries, represents 140 institutions.
The following decisions were made at the annual meeting of the University Council on Friday, April 30, which was chaired by Chancellor Robert Bermudez, and held virtually for the second consecutive year. The reappointment of Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as Vice-Chancellor of the regional university was approved for a second, six-year term Professor Brian Copeland, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the St. Augustine Campus was extended for another year beyond his scheduled retirement in August.
The UWI congratulates Dr. Carla Natalie Barnett who was announced as the 8th Secretary-General of CARICOM on Tuesday May 11, 2020. The two-time UWI graduate has made history as the first woman to be appointed to the post.
