Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor UWISTAT 10 Greeting

When the UWI STAT Corps started, it began with the three Presidents of the existing Guilds Floyd Green, Fallon Lutchmansingh and Richard Toomer, who bought into the concept of a regional Vice Chancellor’s Student Ambassador Corps and worked with Celia Davidson Francis, the Director of Alumni Relations, to further develop and create what is now a prestigious and important student group. It has grown to provide my office with a cadre of over 300 young professionals dedicated to the continuing growth of their alma mater.

Let’s Harvest Memories in 2016

The To-Do list for 2016 is already stretching, but it’s clear that a major focus for the New Year must be to harvest memories, even as we engage with our various stakeholders. Now that the UWI is approaching its seventh decade, it is also in a period when there are fewer and fewer alumni and retirees from the pioneering years to help us fill gaps in the record.

UWIAA Jamaica Chapter’s Presentation of JEWELS sparkles

The UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles (right) and Lady Beckles at JEWELS

The Ballet, JEWELS, is an opulent triptych and was inspired by choreographer George Balanchine's visit to the famous jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels on New York's Fifth Avenue. It celebrates the cities and dance schools of Paris (Emeralds), New York (Rubies) and St. Petersburg (Diamonds). It is visually captivating and the Bolshoi is the only company authorized by the Balanchine Trust to film and broadcast his masterpiece, as was done on December 6, 2015 at the Palace Cineplex in Kingston.

UWIAA Networking: Hong Kong + The Bahamas

Ambassador Missouri Sherman Peter, the UWIAA President of The Bahamas Chapter and Mr. Lewis Leung, the UWIAA Contact in Hong Kong met in New York recently. This is the kind of meet and greet “where we work and live” that we are encouraging amongst alumni worldwide as we seek to build a UWI network and “connect.”

UWI Graduate Dr. Cecil Aird, who is internationally recognized in his  field, has opened the US$250,000.00 Carnegie Hand Institute and Surgery Centre, not only with the aim of assisting individuals who need this specialized service but also with the aim of passing on these specialist hand surgery skills to Jamaican and Caribbean doctors.

Celia Davidson Francis, Director of Alumni Relations Holiday Greetings

The UWI is a microcosm of the Caribbean, a fusion of past and present, and a place that students, faculty, staff, and alumni proudly call their own. Our students and graduates continued to excel regionally and internationally and these and many other accomplishments made 2015 a memorable year.

Our outreach and propulsion of the UWI brand globally continued to expand resulting in visits from the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and US President Barak Obama as well as many other distinguished visitors.

More music for the holidays! : Thanks to our colleagues at the University Archives for posting this Christmas gift of music; a very regional holiday rendition by the UWI’s Panoridim Steel Orchestra!

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor Holiday Greetings

As we exit this 2015, never to be seen again but sure to be the subject of many discourses, your university will begin in earnest preparations for the next strategic plan, 2017-2022. A new conception of our enterprise is required; one that addresses more than ever the pressing issues facing our communities at home and abroad.

Sir George Alleyne , UWI Chancellor Holiday Greetings

My best wishes for the Holidays to all my fellow Pelicans wherever you are. For those of you who are so fortunate, may you be able to spend this season or part of it with your significant loved ones having fun  and enjoying fellowship. I am told that it is now passé to make New Year’s resolutions, but if and when you do plan for 2016, I sincerely hope that you include being more connected with your alma mater. We need to hear from and about our alumni. We need you to be more involved and there are numerous ways in which you can “give back”.

GUEST POST: Again ‘Facing the Challenge of a New Age’; Reflecting on 50 years after Martin Luther King in Jamaica

GUEST POST by Dr E. Anthony Allen
I entered the University of the West Indies in 1960 as a medical student. This fledgling institution was then only twelve years old. During my time there I had the privilege of associating with other ‘students of the sixties’. As we walked the campus paths we prepared ourselves and dreamed of a future. Eventually, together with staff, relatives and well-wishers, we gathered in the Assembly Hall in June 1965 for a very special Valedictory Service. The Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would deliver the sermon.
