The newly constructed University of The West Indies Family Development Centre (FDC) was officially opened on November 20, 2013, Universal Children's Day, at St. John Road, St. Augustine. The FDC was opened in the presence of the Minister of Education, the Honourable Dr. Tim Gopeesingh, and the Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Senator the Honourable Fazil Karim.
The FDC is an extension of the innovative work that has been taking place at the UWI Children's Research Centre over the last 25 years. Its primary aim is to enhance child and family development on a regional and international level. Areas of focus will include research and policy development, child and family outreach, scholarly publications and disseminations of practical information to the public.

The University of the West Indies Mona campus has been recognized as second best international team at the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships with a score of 2.5 points.
The tournament which took place recently in Texas, was in its 60th edition and featured 42 College and University chess teams from North America and the Caribbean.
