UWI Grads reunite at annual UWIAA Toronto Luncheon

Ferdinand Fortune, UWIAA Toronto Chairperson (left) was happy to meet Dr Ludlow Burke (centre), a member of the first UWI class of 33 students, whom he met at the Medical Alumni Luncheon in Toronto two weeks ago. Dr. Burke graduated in 1954 with an MBBS.  At right is Dr Edourd “Eddie” Armour from Dominica, a UWI Mona 1961 medical graduate. The luncheon was a wonderful affair, allowing alumni from all faculties to reconnect and bond.

Military academy signs deal with UWI

The UWI and Caribbean Military Academy (CMA) now have a memorandum of understanding where the University will assist the Academy with programme development.

UWI Pelican, Senator the Honourable Pearnel P. Charles Jr., the Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC) led a High Level Panel on Tourism as the Driver of Sustainable Ocean Health and Ocean Wealth in the Uncut Conversations: Conversations on Climate Change Series put on by the Climate Change Division of the MEGJC on May 9, 2019, in which he underscored the importance of involving inter-sectorial communication and partnerships to prepare for and mitigate against the impacts of climate change.

Mike and Mary McLaughlin are two UWI Graduates. TTFF is a fine example of UWI Graduates working towards social and economic development while reducing inequality with international impact. TTFF can check several boxes for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and currently work in several Caribbean countries.

Marlon James on Time Magazine’s List of 100 Most Influential People of 2019

Marlon James has been listed among the 100 Most Influential People of 2019 by Time magazine. This UWI Pelican received the prestigious Man Booker prize in 2015 for his novel “A Brief History of Seven Killings,” Receiving the Man Booker prize made James into one of the most important voices of the modern literary generation, and he embraced that role wholeheartedly by speaking out on issues of race, literature, and gay rights, among others.

Dr. Gillian Barclay

Las Vegas HEALS has appointed Dr. Gillian Barclay to its Executive Committee. She was also appointed co-chair of the Las Vegas HEALS Legislative Task Force. This UWI Pelican is currently the Industry Specialist in Healthcare for the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

UWI Pelicans – the Fredericks

UWI Pelican Janese March brought the following information to our attention as she wishes to highlight the great work of the Fredericks. Distinguished Pelican, Emeritus Professor the Honourable Joseph Frederick OJ, CD, may be the first West Indian to publish in the prestigious British Medical Journal for Human Reproduction.

UWI STAT Mona – New Ambassadors and Awards

The UWI STAT Mona Corps inducted 20 new Ambassadors and those from the Western Jamaica Campus (WJC) travelled up to participate in the Ceremony. The Director of the WJC, Dr. Patrick Prendergast attended this important occasion, as did the Director and Coordinator of the Vice Chancellor’s regional Ambassadorial Corps, Celia Davidson Francis. 

At the recent UWI Mona Campus Student Awards, the Mona UWI STAT Corps did very well, especially in the areas of Leadership and Service which are areas that they are groomed for:

Dr. Glenda M. Prime

Dr. Glenda M. Prime has been appointed as the Dean for the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University (MSU). She holds the PhD in Education from The UWI, an M.A. in Education, the Post-Graduate Diploma in Science Education, and the B.S. in Chemistry and Biology. She is a science educator and researcher and has published numerous articles in refereed journals in science and technology education and most recently has published a book chapter on technology education.

Diplomatic week lecture held in St Kitts-Nevis

Nevisian-born Professor Jessica Byron-Reid, Director of the University of the West Indies Institute of International Relations at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus was the special guest lecturer at the inaugural Diplomatic Week Lecture on April 9, 2019. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held activities for Diplomatic Week (April 7-12) and the lecture’s theme was “Securing a Resilient Future through Strategic Diplomacy and Effective Dialogue.”

Regional public forum to hear governance issues related to The UWI takes place on April 24

On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, an independent team of high-level persons from across the region, established as the Chancellor’s Commission on Governance, will host a public forum to listen to Governance issues related The University of the West Indies (The UWI).
