Remembering H.E. Cedric Lanyon Harper – longest serving Warden of Irvine Hall

H.E. Cedric Lanyon Harper, has passed at the age of 87. He served as High Commissioner for St. Kitts and Nevis to Jamaica from 2001 to 2018 and had a distinguished 35-year career as a diplomat and was lauded as an endearing and effective representative for St. Kitts and Nevis who served his country with dedication, dignity and diplomatic aplomb by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

Stella Jackman-Ryan

Stella Jackman-Ryan, earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and clinical psychology, respectively, from The University of the West Indies. She hails from Trinidad and Tobago and is a Fulbright Laspau Award recipient and has joined the NC State College of Education as a doctoral student in educational psychology.

Alumni Engagement Programme to Begin this Month!

This programme will allow each lecturer, every semester, to expose their students to at least ONE graduate in the field who can share work experience, trends or cutting edge discoveries in the field, ways to overcome challenges, articles/websites to follow or useful organizations to join and more. This Alumni Relations Engagement programme supports the Triple A Strategic Plan, as Faculty Deans have been asked to expose students to the world of work and that therefore the AEP fits into this larger initiative.

The Caribbean to become world’s first climate-smart zone

Members leading the Climate Change Smart Accelerator initiative, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica, Sir Richard Branson, UWI Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles  and Dr. the Hon. Usain Bolt.

This partnership seeks to ensure that the Caribbean will become the world’s first ‘climate-smart zone’ and it was launched at the UWI Mona Campus. A coalition of 26 countries and over 40 private and public sector partners are now working together to implement climate solutions for resilience, renewable energy, development of sustainable cities, oceans and transportation.

Dr. the Right Excellent and Right Honourable, Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, was the recipient of the University of the West Indies Alumni Association (UWIAA) St. Kitts and Nevis Chapter Pelican Award on August 01, 2018, at Government House.

The UWIAA BVI rises

Mrs. Celia George, UWI Alumna, is now the official UWIAA Contact in the BVI and is encouraging UWI alumni in the BVI to become engaged with the Open Campus site there as well as The UWI generally.

She is ably assisted by Ms. Tanisha Todd, of the Open Campus BVI. Mr. Sandeep Jagger has worked with Campus Alumni Officer for the Open Campus, Mrs. Sandra Griffith- Carrington to revitalize the Chapter.

“Our graduates are our most important asset. We are delighted to recognise them at this moment of the University’s history” noted Chancellor Robert Bermudez at the University of the West Indies (UWI) 70th Anniversary Pelican Awards on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Seven distinguished alumni were honoured for professional excellence and community service in the Caribbean and internationally.

Director of Alumni Relations for the UWI, Mrs Celia Davidson Francis, during her address, declared “I truly believe that The UWI’s power and reach lies in its graduate population.”

UWI Vice Chancellor meets Bahamian Alumni

The UWI Vice Chancellor, Sir Hilary Beckes attended the Robing Ceremony of the Medical Class on June 24th and took the opportunity to meet with alumni. The Bahamas Chapter is planning a Back-To- UWI Weekend with many exciting activities from Nov 16-18, 2018 as they continue to celebrate UWI’s 70th Anniversary – if you are going to be in Nassau then – please plan on taking part!

UWI Alumnus elected to UN Human Rights Committee

UWI Alumnus, Dr. Christopher Arif Bulkan was elected on June 14, 2018 to serve on the United Nations Human Rights Committee for a term of four years from 2019 – 2022. He hails from Guyana and holds a Master of Law from University College London (1997) and a Bachelors of Law from the University of West Indies (1998). He obtained a PhD in Law from the Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, in Toronto, Canada in May 2008. He co-founded the University of West Indies Rights Advocacy Project (U-RAP), in 2009.

UWI Alumna Judge Renatha S. Francis promoted

The Hon. Judge Renatha S. Francis has been appointed to the Circuit Court of the Eleventh Judicial District serving Miami-Dade County, Florida. She is one of only three black women of the 123 judges currently serving Miami-Dade County.

She is a graduate of The UWI and her promotion holds special importance for the Caribbean Bar Association in Florida and the wider Caribbean community, who are currently celebrating June as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. She is a Caribbean immigrant who has contributed greatly to American society.

AFUWI Board member shines

Gail Moaney, a hospitality industry leader in marketing and public relations, received the Marcella Martinez Award in memory of the meritorious and productive life of the late Caribbean public relations professional and diplomat. She serves on the board of The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI).

UWIAA Bahamas Chapter Souse-Out, Saturday, May 26 2018

The Souse-Out held at the home of Acting President of the UWIAA Bahamas Chapter, Dr. Mortimer G. Moxey was a relaxed fun event which brought alumni and Friends of the UWI together to celebrate the UWI’s 70th Anniversary. Various types of delicious souse were served with fresh baked "johnny cake" and were enjoyed by all. Over 200 meals were served and even though there were heavy showers which lasted for hours, alumni stayed on at the home of Dr. Moxey talking, reminiscing and networking and enjoying each-others company for hours.

UWIAA Toronto Celebrates 30th Anniversary

On May 27, 2018 faithful alumni and Friends of the UWI gathered in Mississauga to attend the annual luncheon and to celebrate both the 30th Anniversary of the UWIAA Toronto Chapter and the 70th Anniversary of The UWI. Ferdinand Fortune assumed the presidency of the Chapter, as Co-president, Michael Henville, died suddenly on March 9, 2018.

Ms. Pamela Coke-Hamilton

Ms. Pamela Coke-Hamilton is now Director, Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC), D2, in UNCTAD. She has an in-depth knowledge of international trade and extensive experience in development policy, private sector development, capacity building and technical cooperation. This expertise was gained from her tenure with regional and international organizations including work with member states, national governments and universities.
