UWI Graduate Earl Jarrett was elected from among the four selected commissioners of the ECJ in keeping with the Electoral Commission (Interim) Act 2006 which states that “the selected commissioners shall elect one of their number to be chairman of the commission and so inform the governor general”. The ECJ comprises nine members — the director of elections, four selected commissioners, and four nominated commissioners, two nominated on the advice of the prime minister and two on the advice of the leader of the Opposition.
Born on January 15, 1932, she received her early education at the then St. Michael Girls’ School and Queen’s College in Barbados. She later received a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma in Education from the University College of the West Indies and a M.S. Education in University Administration from Indiana University.
Dr Sharmayne Saunders has been appointed as Head of Site, Open Campus Belize.
She has built a 25-year career in business, consultancy and academia. Following several leadership roles in the private sector, Dr Saunders joined The UWI Open Campus in 2008 as Programme Officer and was also a Course Facilitator/Lecturer for undergraduate, postgraduate and continued professional education courses. She continues to provide postgraduate research teaching and supervision to many students
Dr Samantha Nicholson-Spence is a medical internist who heads the Department of Medicine at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH). After graduating from The UWI with her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2007, she did her internship at KPH, and has worked there since. Even while she completed her residency at the University of Miami, she kept in touch and was on a flight back to Kingston right after her last exam.
The UWI St Augustine has appointed the first female Professor of Science, Professor Judith Gobin. She is also Head of the Department of Life Sciences, the largest Department in the Faculty of Science and Technology. Not only is she an academic but she has contributed significantly at the national, regional and global level to promote and apply scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems.”
