Tropical Storm Bret 1993

ON the 7th August 1993 Tropical Storm Bret passed Trinidad and Tobago with winds of 44 km/hr and dumping 111mm of Rainfall. Rains and winds caused Power cuts. In the Southern end of Tobago and Low-Lying Central Trinidad some houses suffered minor damage due to flooding and falling of trees. There were no reports of serious casualties or damage on the two-island nation, but Army troops were in downtown Port-Of-Spain apparently to prevent looting. Bret knocked out power to about 35,000 residents in the northeast villages of Balandra and Toco. An underwear power cable running between Trinidad and Tobago was split, leaving parts of Tobago in the dark, according to Allan Richards, the Tobago Director of the National Emergency Management Agency. Ten soldiers were treated for burns after trying to move a downed electrical wire in Tobago, but their injuries did not appear serious.

The Ministry of Agriculture estimated that over TTD $ 4 million in crops were devastated by the floods. Infrastructural damage was estimated at more than 979,000 TTD in cost to access to roads and bridges (Brown ,1993 as quoted in Edwards, n.d.)
