Hurricane Irma 2017

Hurricane Irma reached its maximum intensity of 155t knots when it was located at 70 n miles east-southeast of Barbuda. It hit Barbuda as a category 5 hurricane. Barbuda received more devastation than Antigua, 95 % of buildings on Barbuda were damaged, leaving the island “barely habitable” one infant died in Barbuda. all communication systems damaged in Barbuda
In Barbuda, the single hospital, airport , schools and 2 hotels on the island of 68 square miles were damaged or lay in ruins. Following the storm there was no running water, telephone service out of service. Following the storm most of the 1700 residents of the island had to be evacuated to Antigua
Antigua was spared the brunt of the storm and according to the Antigua Tourist Board Antigua was open four days after the passage of the storm
Cost : The Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology estimated a lower loss estimate of 120 million USD
