1926 Nasssau Hurricane

Deaths: 74
Impact: Central Bahamas hit hard by cyclone, led to destruction of 500 homes, 90 % of total on Great Exuma, roads and bridges were swept away, and agricultural produce ruined. The death toll among livestock was also high. On Eleuthera fruit and Coconut Trees were damaged with strong winds and waves leveling 240 homes, 14 churches and 2 schools; most roads were unusable following the storm and 2 to 4 feet of water was left covering the island. 74 drownings occurred near Cat Island. At Berry Islands most of the homes were damaged and on Bimini the hurricane caused damage to several churches and buildings. New Providence received the most significant losses particularly in Nassau where some roofs were torn off completely. People describe the hurricane as the most devastating they could remember; many boats were damaged; Nassau was described as ravaged and within most districts were stories of ruin and havoc
