Hurricane Andrew 1992

Category 5 storm caused damage of 250 million USD to Bahamas. One of the worst hurricanes to hit the islands in 60 years, 4 persons killed, 1700 persons left homeless of the 250,000-total population. 2 % of tourism properties (rooms, cottages and apartments) affected by physical devastation. Five schools and 800 homes destroyed. Telecommunications, transport infrastructure, water and airport and port severely damaged. Sanitation and Nassau and Freeport were untouched except for minor damage from winds and rain, as were Abacos, the Exumas, Andros Islands and San Salvador.
The islands of Grand Bahama, Northern Exuma chain of islands, Central Andros, southern Abaco and Cat island experienced tropical storm force winds. Northern Eleuthera, New Providence, Bimini, Northern Andros, Berry islands, Chub Cay, Cat Cay and Cun Cay experienced winds of full hurricane force.
Storm Surge of 25 feet was reported in North Eleuthera; this island received the brunt of the hurricane with homes and other buildings being badly hit. Northwest Bahamas suffered most of the damage with the exception of Grand Bahama. Damages in the millions of dollars occurred in the Bimini/ Berry Islands. North Andros experienced minimal damage, but coastal areas were hardest hit.
