Hurricane Floyd 1999

Hurricane Floyd reached category 4 intensity in Bahamas leading to severe damage on Abaco, Cat Island, San Salvador and Eleothera whose population lost water, electricity and telephone communications and saw their houses partially or totally destroyed. This was one of the most intense hurricanes to affect the country with winds of more than 250kms per hour. A storm surge of around 6 meters above normal tide caused flooding in many coastal communities which lead to widespread damage in the outer islands. The huge waves combined with the extreme wind lef to severe disruption to communication, electricity and numerous reports of roofs being ripped off homes. Most roads and docks on the island were damaged. The island of New Providence with Nassau and the main tourism destination suffered minor damage, there were however a significant amount of houses damaged or destroyed. In Abaco more than 2000 persons became homeless because of the hurricane. In Eleuthera, where the population is at around 10,500, 25 % of tomes as the water system was damaged.
Following the hurricane around 3000 families or 10,000 persons were in need of urgent external assistance to cover basic needs. Bahamas required 435,000 USD in aid following the hurricane; the Inter-American Development Bank loaned 21 million to aid in reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure including bridges, roads and docks.
