Earthquake 1997

On the 22nd of April 1997, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred 10 km of the south west coast of Tobago (Latchman, 2011). Contradictory to the determination of the magnitude established, some U.S and French Observations measured the magnitude at 6.5, while The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Unit in Trinidad reported a magnitude of 5.9 (Caribbean Coastal Studies). According to the United States Geological Survey (1997) the earthquake the earthquake occurred at 09: 31: 23 UTC (05: 31 local standard time) with a depth of 5 kilometers. The quake was followed by several aftershocks with magnitudes around 5.7.
The earthquake accumulated damaged estimated around TT $ 18 million (Latchman, 2011). These included damages to general public infrastructure, 30 damaged houses, 6 collapsed houses, and 2 causalities (Caribbean Coastal Studies). This earthquake followed a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred three weeks prior on the 2nd April 1997 (Latchman, 2011). The earthquake occurred around 06: 14: 31 UTC with a depth of 45 kilometers (United States Geological Society, 1997). Damages caused by the earthquake included one collapsed house and substantial damages to public damages including the island’s central bus terminal, library and post office (Caribbean Coastal Studies).
